 Problems with sound
Author: emulation freak (---.proxy.aol.com)
Date:   12-05-01 17:15

Ok, first of all this isnt a problem with hugo, I'm kinda new to computers and I am learning still but I just don't know how to work hugo, I don't even know what lunex or whatever it is called does. My only luck with using a pc engine emulator is with magic engine. I figured I would ask here becuase nobody knows about pc emulation at other websites but the people here are smart =). So anyway the only way I got the magic engine to play mp3 music was with magic engine v.91 with the system card3. The newer version of magic engine is alot nicer but I don't hear the mp3 music. Only the cheap music plays, not the mp3 so I played Dracula X on magic engine v.91 and it played the music perfectly. Anyways when I played that I remembered this really REALLY tight game I played when I borrowed my cusins turbo graphix 16 cd thingy, it was Y's books 1 and 2. It's been 4 years since I played so I downloaded the game and mp3 from a website. I burned it to a cd the same way I did it with DRACX but when I try to play it on magic engine v.91 it goes to the music player screen and playes the first track saying its a pc engine game. When I tried it on magic engine v.98 it played, but the game is @!#$ because it doesnt play tyhe awsome soundtrack, its just like playing a nes game. The games music is wwhat made me play it 4 years ago and now I have to play it without the damn music. The only music that plays is the town music, but those arent mp3's, they are cheap iso sounds or whatever, but it's su[posed to be like that, i remember. Here is the log, everyone elso shows their log when there is a problem so I will too. Here:

Ok smart people, I'm sure you understand that stuff. What's the problem? I'll mention one more thing, this may be why, I don't know. I got the Enlish version of the game but when I tried the mp3's the voice scenes are in japanesse. When I played the game years ago they where in ENGLISH so maybe the english iso and the japanesse mp3 dont mix. I wanted to try to play this on hugo but I don't understand that stuff, I hope you come out with an easier version to use so newbies like me could play these old great games. Replies would make me happy, thanks for reading! =)

The problem is that mp3s & ISOs will often produce a incorrect copy of the original game. Aside from the audio quality loss that occurs from converting a WAV to MP3 & back, there's another problem with the ISO/MP3 archive format; When you burn a CD using mp3s & isos, the mp3 has to be decompressed(u want redbook audio), unfortunately it isn't(usually) restored to it's original size, so it will take a different amount of sectors to store on the CD. Game code (most) will literally
specify play audio from sector a to b ( e.g. play audio 12152...21416). These sector values are hard coded within the game code, they're not dynamically retrieved from the TOC...

Anyway, I have an original copy of Ancient Ys Vanished Book I & II, here's what the TOC looks like:

You'll notice that all your sectors values are entirely off, therefore your CD will never work correctly in a real DUO.. Emulators i supposed could compensate, but MagicEngine doesn't, so if the game does manage to work, the audio may or may not work correctly. Certainly you won't hear all audio tracks from begginning to end correctly...

The GOOD NEWS is that i & others have a bin/cue archive of Ys I&II available for download. Check out our(Tru's Turbo ISOs board )messageboard at http://pub43.ezboard.com/ftrusturboisos89372frm8. At http://pub43.ezboard.com/ftrusturboisos89372frm8.showMessage?topicID=394.topic, you'll find the schedule for all our RIGG FTP servers... RIGG is a group i joined, dedicated to providing the public with original PCEngine/DUO CD titles.

It's a 551 meg download with average bandwidth of 4-15kb/s, compressed using WinRAR, so you'll have to be patient(you'll need a day or two to complete the download). Our servers are synced with 10 meg rar chunks of each title, so if u can't finish downloading from one server, you can download from others. You'll need sfv32 as well, to test each 10 meg rar chunk in the end, so as to be sure you got a good clean download.

P.S.
I have a comprehensive list of titles for download at http://home.earthlink.net/~nlivaditis/rigg.html.

NightWolve,

Your comment regarding absolute sector addressing was extremely well-put.

Although some games will address audio (OR DATA !!!) by track number + offset, many will address by absolute sector. If your sector addressing is off, you're out of luck.

It sounds as though the original post stated that the audio/data tracks might have been mismatched (ie. Japanese audio with English data), amplifying any other problems.
